The Stelvio Tre Modi, July 2021 (aka Stelvio 3 Ways)
Cimbed Mont Ventoux 3 times in a day ? Have you taken on the Maratona, Etape & Marmotte ? On Sunday 18th July 2021, the very first Stelvio Tre Modi Sportive (Gran Fondo) takes place and we are an official tour operator! If you look for a challenging ride the taking on the famous Stelvio (2758m hight) 3 ways should tick your boxes. Be one of those riders to look back in years and say "I rode that event the first time it was run"
The organiser has 15 years experience in running trips and tours to Bormio so it was natural to organise a unique event. Numbers will be smaller than the normal European Gran Fondo which makes it easier and safer in regards to Covid-19 restrictions.
The Stelvio Tre Modi Sportive (Gran Fondo) is a fully organised event with mechanics , feed stations , ride numbers , chip timing etc. You head up the mighty Stelvio from Bormio first before heading down to then head up the little known Umbrail Pass. Once up, its back down again to tackle the Stelvio Pass from Prato.
There are three feed stations including the finish line. There is also end of ride food, mobile mechanics, broom wagon, medical assistance, chip timing and a nice little after party back at the hotel.
You will have Thursday, Friday & Saturday to prepare for this event with the Gran Fondo taking place on Sunday 18th July. We have you based at The 4* Palace Hotel Bormio and its 3* sister hotel next door so expect lots of cyclists, lycra and the odd glass of red wine !
As this is the first time this event will be run, spaces are limited so get signed up for the biggest and best cycling event in 2021 !

The Stelivio probably needs no introduction to those familiar with iconic cycling locations. These Alps sit nestled between the Dolomites to the east, the French Alps to the north and the Austrian and Swiss mountains to the north.
The event commences from Bormio, you will be climbing straight away with 21kms ahead of you with an average gradient of 7%,which will lead you to the first feed station which is just 3km short of the top of the pass of the left.
We suggest you take on food and a rest before dropping down into Prato. After a careful decent circa 24km, you will then turn left and level out along a rolling terrain for circa 15km , upon which you will take a left turn and commence the climb of the Umbrial Pass. You will then cross the boarder back into Italy and circa 1km you will reach the 2nd feed station. You must arrive within 5 and half hours of the start, the cut is 13:00. Failure to arrive by this cut time mean you will be eliminated from the event/results sheet. Should you wish to continue then there will be NO SUPPORT available.
By now you would have covered circa 76km , after you have been fed, watered and rested , U-turn and retrace your steps by dropping down the Umbrail Pass, when you reach the T-Junction turn right and retrace along the Vally road , then take right , signed STELVIO and commence the final climb of the Stelvio from the Parto side – a 24km climb to reach the finish line (third feed).
If at the 2nd feed before returning down the Umbrail Pass , you feel you have had enough then carefully descend down in the direction of Bormio to your hotel, but I am sure you would want to continue and complete this epic challenge you came to do.
Being the highest tarmac mountain road in the Italian Alps, it shares the mantle with the Mortirolo and the Gavia, being slightly larger than the latter two. Situated in the region of Bormio.
Earn serious stripes and complete this one!

Thinking of travelling to Bormio on your own route ? There are a few different ways. Bormio is located in Alta Valtellina, right in the heart of the Italian Alps and very close to the Swiss border. You can reach Bormio by car or public transport, the latter is a combination of train and bus. Bormio’s closest Italian Airports are Bergamo and Milan, but is well served by Zurich in Switzerland.
Local bike hire is available. Please ask at the time of enquiry
