The Maratona dles Dolomites Route

It was the National Geographic magazine which described this event as “one of the biggest, most passionate, and most chaotic bike races on Earth” and, based on the fact that in 2012 some 29,000 riders entered the lottery for the 4800 available spaces, it is also insanely popular! In addition to these 4800 ‘public’ entries, a further 4200 are reserved for travel organisers, charities etc. making a total of 9000 riders abroad in the Dolomites. Add in the fact that there are usually riders from about 40 different countries and it makes for a unique experience.

On the day there are a choice of three courses which allows riders of different abilities (and ambitions) to test themselves.

The Sellaronda option is the least challenging of the three courses with a total distance of less than 60 kilometres and a total altitude gain of around 1800 metres.

Campolongo Pass: 5.8 km, Gradient: 6.1%
Pordoi Pass: 9.2 km, Gradient: 6.9%
Sella Pass: 5.5 km, Gradient: 7.9%
Gardena Pass: 5.8 km, Gradient: 4.3%

Maratona Middle CourseThe next level of challenge is the Middle Course which is simply a continuation of the Sellaronda course with the Campolongo Pass waiting once again. The course is about 106 kilometres with an altitude gain of over 3000 metres.

Maratona courseFinally, the big one! To complete it involves almost 140 kilometres and a total altitude difference of over 4000 metres – not one for the faint hearted.
